About SubAura

What is subAura?

SubAura is a sophisticated tracking system, yet it is simple and intuitive to use. It brings together three key elements:

  • A GPS-enabled device. Our range ensures there is one to meet every requirement, for private or industrial use.
  • Wireless airtime, for the device to communicate with our website. Some of our devices use mobile phone networks, while others use satellite. This means we can provide affordable coverage, from local to near-global.
  • This tracking website. Using your own secure login, you can edit your account, manage your device and view its position on a map. There are lots of other features, including creating a geofence, setting triggers and defining email or text alerts.

What kind of tracking devices can be used with subAura?

  • SubAura C series are suitable where there is good GSM network coverage and little requirement for roaming. The range includes devices for use in-vehicle, waterproof (IP68-rated) units for maritime applications and battery-powered devices for applications where there is no host power supply.
  • SubAura S series devices use a satellite network to communicate. These are suited to near-global tracking applications, or to areas where GSM coverage is limited. They are robust (to MIL standards), fully waterproof (IP68), incur no roaming charges and can remain in operation for 3 or more years on their own internal power source.

What is the difference between the S100 and the S200 devices?

  • The S100 features motion detection and alternative reporting, as well as one external alarm output. The end-user can also change out the off-the shelf batteries. The alarm feature is useful for door/hatch alarm features for example on container doors and vessels.
  • The S200 is a smaller device that is perfect for low-profile security tracking of high value assets such as containers and yachts. It has no external connectors making it very robust and is configured using a Wi-Fi connection.

Using SubAura

Account Tab

Q: I’ve logged into my Account but I need to update my Contact details. How can I edit them?

Once you are logged in, go to ‘Account’ and click ‘Edit Contact Details’. You can now change the details of your account

Q: I’d like to change the name in my asset list of the device. How can I do this?

Please send an email request to support@subaura.comwith the details of the new name and we’ll change it for you

Q: What is the External AssetID number in my Account list?

This is the unique serial number of the device. It cannot be changed and is used to identify the device in subAura.

Q: Can I change the password I use to login?

Yes, once you are logged into your account, choose ‘Edit Login Details’ and then choose your new password

Q: I’ve forgotten my password, what do I do?

Please send an email to support@subaura.com and we’ll advise you of the procedure to recover your password

Q: My boat is showing speed in miles per hour – I’d like it to be in knots – can I change this?

Yes, in your account, choose ‘Edit Profile’ and in the ‘Speed Measure’ drop down box, choose ‘knots’. Click ‘Update Profile’ at the bottom of the page and you’re done

Q: My boat is located in the USA. How can I change the time zone of reporting to EST instead of GMT?

In your account, choose ‘Edit Profile’ and in the ‘Time Zone’ drop down box choose the appropriate time zone from the list provided.

Tracking Tab

Q: When I choose the tracking tab how can I quickly jump to the position of my asset?

There are two ways to do this. First you can just click on the name of the asset in the box on the right hand side of the map. The system will then load up the last position reports received. Or, if your asset is typically always in one place you can choose the default location for the map to go to. To do this, go to ‘Account’, choose ‘Edit Profile’ and enter the post or zip code you’d like the map to always go to. Then click ‘Go To’ in the Enter Postcode box. You can also change the default zoom setting for the map to show using the plus and minus boxes in the top left of the map. When you’ve finished, don’t forget to click ‘Update Profile’ at the bottom left.

Q: How do I move around the map in the Tracking display?

This works in exactly the same way as Google Maps. You can zoom or adjust the map using the buttons in the top left.

Q: The satellite image of my location has near total cloud cover – what do I do?

There are some areas where Google Maps satellite images have cloud cover, are on the joins of the satellite images or are not very good quality. In this case we suggest you change to ‘Map’ view using the Google Maps button in the top right of the map view.

Q: I cannot always get a position report from my asset. Why is this?

If the device is currently in an area where it cannot get a good GPS fix, perhaps in a large built up area or in a heavily wooded area then it will not be able to send a recent position report. As soon as it does find the GPS satellites again it will send a report. Or, there maybe no mobile phone signal in the area (C series devices). In this case it will send a position report once it finds a mobile signal again. If this happens a lot consider the SubAura S series devices as these use satellites for communications not the mobile phone network

Geofence Tab

Q: I’ve set up a geofence and an alert but I’ve not received the alert to my email. Have I done something wrong?

First check that the email address you entered is correct. Clicking on an existing geofence in the list allows you to see what you set up and edit it as necessary. It is also important to note that geofences work either On Exit or On Entry into or out of a geofence. For an out trigger to work, (On Exit) the device must have reported inside the geofence and also successfully report outside the the geofence in order to generate an alert. This is important for the S series (satellite devices) as they do not usually report as often as the C series devices. For example, if an S100 is configured to report every hour, it must first report in the geofence once that geofence has been created. If it moves outside the geofence then it must be outside for more than an hour and successfully report again while it is outside in order to create an alert.

Q: Why do I need to create a Waypoint when I’m creating a geofence?

The Waypoint is used by the system to create an anchor around or near where the geofence will be created. It makes finding and naming geofences a lot easier as you may end up with a lot of them

Q: I’m having trouble creating my geofence – I cannot see how to create a circular geofence.

Once you are ready to drop down the geofence (Step 3), you must choose either ‘Circular’ or ‘Polygon’ from the box in the bottom right of the screen. Then (for a circle), click once on the map near the waypoint and then a bit further out click again to create the outer radius. A circle will be created and if you need to move or adjust it you can do so just by clicking and dragging a balloon marker. Ir-regular geofences are created using the polygon tool. You can create as many place markers as you like by clicking on the map but you must close the geofence by clicking on the first marker you created. If its successful, the blue geofence will be created.

Q: I’ve set up my geofence, but now I want to move my boat without it sending an alert. How do I stop the alerts?

Just login to your account, choose geofences and in the list of geofences you created and select ‘De-Activate’. The alerts will now be suspended and when you want to start alerts again just click ‘Activate’ in order to start alerts again. You don’t need to create a new geofence everytime you want to move your boat!

Alerts Tab

Q: I want to be warned when one of my assets exceeds a speed limit I have set. Can SubAura do this?

Yes! If you have a device that reports speed (C series devices) then in alerts just create an alert when any asset’s speed is equal to or greater than 60mph for example. Please note that at this time speed alerts are not supported on S Series devices

Q: Why do I need specific alerts that are listed in the alert page?

These alerts are special messages sent from the respective devices if the device has been configured to send them. For example, if a device is just being used to monitor movement of a container instead of having to login to the SubAura website every hour to check the system can be set to send a message alert to an email address when it moves. Alerts can also be used to warn or record changes in configuration

Q: I have set an alert trigger up in my account but I’m not receiving any alerts.

Please note that devices must be configured to send specific alerts. To find out more please contact support@subaura.com

Q: What other alerts are available?

Different devices support different alert types – perhaps you would like an alert when a container door is opened. In order to find out more about what alerts are available for your device please send an email to support@subaura.com

Reporting Tab

Q: Can I see where any of my assets have been recently?

Yes! On the account page choose Historical Reporting. Select the asset (if you only have one it will be the default choice) and then choose the date range you would like to report on. Then click ‘Generate Report’. Choose to save or open the report in the next box that comes up. The report can then be viewed in Google Earth (if you do not have it installed go to http://earth.google.co.uk/)

Q: Can I view reports without Google Earth?

Currently all reports are generated in Google Earth as this provides the best end user experience. If you need reporting for other internal reasons or uses and would like reports to be available in other formats please contact us at support@subaura.com
